Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Peel and slice potatoes into thin, even rounds. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until beef is browned and onion is soft, 5–7 minutes. Drain excess grease.
  4. Season beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Top with half the beef mixture. Repeat with remaining potatoes and beef.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk. Pour evenly over casserole.
  7. Sprinkle cheddar cheese over top. Drizzle melted butter over the cheese.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.
  9. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms or a handful of frozen peas to the beef mixture.
