Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (plus eggs, oil, and water required on box)
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, slightly cooled
  • ½ cup Kahlua or coffee liqueur
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 8 oz whipped topping, thawed
  • optional chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, or coffee beans for garnish

Method

  1. Preheat oven according to cake mix package instructions. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Prepare and bake the yellow cake according to the package directions.
  2. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Use the handle of a wooden spoon or a skewer to poke holes evenly all over the cake.
  3. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the brewed coffee, Kahlua, melted butter, and granulated sugar. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is warmed through.
  4. Slowly pour the warm coffee-Kahlua mixture evenly over the cake, allowing it to seep into the holes. Let the cake cool completely to absorb the liquid.
  5. Spread the whipped topping evenly over the cooled cake, covering the entire surface.
  6. Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.
  7. Before serving, garnish with chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, or coffee beans if desired. Slice and enjoy chilled.

Notes

For a stronger cocktail flavor, add an extra 2–3 tablespoons of Kahlua to the glaze. You can also mix a splash of vodka into the glaze for a more authentic White Russian twist.
